We documented a historic Antarctic expedition that united astronauts, scientists, and storytellers to explore the interconnected future of our oceans, our planet, and the cosmos. By capturing StarTalk Live, panels, landings, and global student broadcasts, we created a visually driven narrative designed to educate and inspire the next generation of explorers.
Project Overview

We joined the Space2Sea Antarctic Expedition as part of the documentary filmmaking team aboard the Seabourn Venture—an icebreaking expedition vessel built to reach the most remote edges of the planet. Our mission: explore the future of space and ocean discovery while documenting conversations between some of the most influential voices in exploration and science. From filming Neil deGrasse Tyson’s first-ever StarTalk Live recorded at sea—crossing the infamous Drake Passage—to capturing insights from William Shatner, moonwalker Charlie Duke, Scott Kelly, and Céline Cousteau, the expedition brought two great frontiers into a single story: sea and space.

Across Antarctic landing sites including Deception Island, Booth Island, Lallemand Fjord, Point Wilde, and Hope Bay, we filmed panels, vérité moments, global webinars, and intimate reflections framed by calving glaciers, katabatic winds, and the raw power of an untouched continent. The result is a cinematic body of work that educates, inspires, and invites viewers to think differently about our role as explorers and stewards of Earth.

THE CHALLENGE

Antarctica is one of the harshest and least predictable environments on Earth—an extreme setting for filmmaking, logistics, and live storytelling. Our challenge was to document a complex expedition featuring iconic voices in exploration, all while adapting to volatile weather, strict environmental protocols, and a constantly shifting schedule.

We needed to capture panels, landings, presentations, interviews, and vérité content without disrupting scientific operations, guest experience, or IAATO guidelines. Additionally, we were tasked with translating dense scientific ideas—climate, astrophysics, conservation, and exploration—into compelling stories that a global audience could understand and feel.

Equipment had to survive freezing conditions, saltwater, heavy moisture, and relentless motion, especially while filming in the Drake Passage. The final challenge: ensure that the story reached beyond the ship, engaging viewers worldwide rather than only those on board.

THE APPROACH

Our approach blended vérité documentary filmmaking with structured storytelling, capturing both the planned programming and the unscripted moments that revealed the human side of exploration.

We followed a minimal-footprint production style to remain agile, respectful of wildlife, and ready for changing conditions and constant movement. Each scene, landing, and conversation was shaped around a central narrative: Earth as our shared frontier.

By pairing cinematic imagery with authentic voices, we built an emotional and visually arresting foundation for an educational documentary.

THE SOLUTION

We filmed the first-ever StarTalk Live recorded at sea—now viewed over 200,000 times—along with Tyson’s follow-up StarTalk episode, which has reached 5.5 million viewers. We documented landings on remote Antarctic terrain, produced interviews with astronauts, artists, and scientists, and captured a global “Classroom to Continent” webinar reaching more than 200,000 students.

The footage now forms the backbone of a documentary being pitched to National Geographic and Discovery, alongside educational media designed to extend the expedition’s reach into schools, museums, and digital platforms. Through cinematography, narrative structure, and a focus on emotional resonance, we transformed a remote expedition into a story the world can access.

THE IMPACT

The Space2Sea project bridged two worlds—space and ocean exploration—while inspiring global curiosity, environmental awareness, and scientific literacy. By capturing the voices of astronauts, conservationists, and storytellers against one of the most fragile landscapes on Earth, the film encourages stewardship of our oceans and responsible exploration beyond our planet.

With millions of viewers already reached through StarTalk, and more through classrooms and upcoming documentary distribution, the project continues to ignite wonder and education long after the ship returned to port.

The Space2Sea Voyage of Legends expedition captured global attention by uniting science, exploration, and storytelling from one of the most remote regions on Earth. Through collaborations with cultural icons like William Shatner, leading scientific voices including Neil deGrasse Tyson and NASA astronauts, and support from respected partners such as Klean Kanteen and Fortnum & Mason, the mission generated substantial press, social engagement, and broadcast visibility. Coverage from major outlets — including CNN, Space.com, Golf Digest, Yahoo! News, and the Space Foundation — amplified awareness of Space2Sea’s mission to connect ocean conservation, planetary science, and youth education.

This multi-platform exposure not only elevated the project’s global credibility, but also positioned Space2Sea as a compelling bridge between space exploration and ocean stewardship, inspiring curiosity and conversation across both industries and generations.
