Along 1,200 miles of remote ocean reef, Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project’s (PMDP) free divers battle ghost nets threatening one of Earth’s most fragile marine ecosystems. Short film“Cutting Free,” in partnership with XTRATUF, is a powerful look at the people risking everything to defend the wild heart of the Pacific.
Project Overview

“Cutting Free” is a short film collaboration between XTRATUF and the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project (PMDP), following free-diving crews as they cut and haul ghost nets by hand to protect 1,200 miles of remote Hawaiian reefs. Their mission restores one of the world’s most significant marine sanctuaries and defends the wildlife that depends on it.

The film also highlights the all-new XTRATUF Riptide—a one-piece BioLite™ slip-on built for life where land and sea collide. With drainage throughout, non-marking performance, and slip-resistant traction, the Riptide is made for long days on deck, on the dock, and in service of protecting the ocean.

THE CHALLENGE

The challenge was to translate Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project’s (PMDP) unique and labor-intensive work into a short film that felt honest, human, and filled with possibility. Filming on and beneath the water required patience, trust, and deep respect for the ocean, as we worked to balance the gravity of ghost nets with the hope that drives those who remove them—creating a visual story that could move viewers to care, and ultimately, to act.

We also had to distill a mission of enormous scale into something intimate and emotionally clear, ensuring every frame earned its place and every moment supported the heart of the story. The goal was not just to show what PMDP does, but to help people feel why it matters.

THE APPROACH

Our approach was to let the ocean, the work, and the crew guide the storytelling—embracing a documentary style rooted in observation, patience, and respect. We focused on intimate moments both above and below the surface, pairing clean, purposeful visuals with restrained narration to honor the gravity of PMDP’s mission.

Rather than over-explain, we chose to show the human commitment behind each cut net, using sound, movement, and natural light to create an emotional through-line. XTRATUF Product integration was handled with intention, allowing the Riptide sandal to live in the environment naturally—seen in use, not staged—so the conservation story remained at the heart of the film.

THE SOLUTION

We created a mission-first short film that embedded our crew alongside PMDP, capturing their process with honest, documentary-style storytelling. By combining underwater footage, natural sound, and impactful interviews, we focused on showing the problem and the people solving it—not overstating or dramatizing.

The XTRATUF product integration of the Riptide sandal was integrated only where it naturally lived, supporting the work without distracting from it. The result is a clear, human-centered story that educates, engages, and reinforces the impact of PMDP’s ongoing mission.

THE IMPACT

The film helped bring greater visibility to PMDP’s ongoing mission, driving awareness around ghost nets and the urgency of removal efforts. By sharing the story through XTRATUF’s channels, we expanded PMDP’s reach beyond the conservation community and connected new audiences to their work. The final piece sparked conversations, increased engagement, and reinforced XTRATUF’s commitment to protecting the waters that shape its brand.
