Project Overview

THE CHALLENGE
Remote waters. International logistics. An untold story.
Producing branded content in the Lofoten Islands presented a unique convergence of production, logistical, and creative challenges that demanded meticulous planning and deep trust between brand, agency, and subject. The remote Arctic archipelago—accessible by small aircraft—required the crew to transport a full production package into one of Norway’s most weather-volatile environments. Coordinating crew across multiple disciplines—director, DP, underwater specialist Inge Wegge, producer, and photographer—while aligning schedules with the unpredictable tidal harvest windows of Lofoten Seaweed demanded real-time adaptability on the ground.
The brand collaboration itself required a delicate balance: XTRATUF’s identity had to be authentically woven into the narrative without overshadowing the story of Angelita Eriksen, Tamara Singer, and the broader seaweed movement they represent. Running concurrently with the full-length documentary Intertidal, the team also faced the creative and logistical complexity of serving two distinct deliverables—each with its own tone, edit, and intended audience—from a single production period.

THE APPROACH
Story-led. Place-driven. Built on trust.
Ampersand Studios approached this project the same way it approaches all impact and cause marketing work: by leading with the story, not the brand. Rather than scripting a traditional commercial narrative, the team embedded itself within the rhythms of Lofoten Seaweed’s daily harvest operations—building genuine trust with Angelita and Tamara before a single frame was captured.
The vérité filmmaking methodology was intentional, allowing the environment, the labor, and the philosophy of the harvesters to speak for themselves, with XTRATUF’s presence felt organically through the work being done. Shooting concurrently with Intertidal allowed the branded content to benefit from the documentary’s depth of access and cinematic texture while maintaining a distinct edit structure shaped specifically for XTRATUF’s audience and brand voice. This dual-production model—capturing two films from one shoot—maximized the efficiency of an expensive international production while ensuring both deliverables retained their own integrity.

THE SOLUTION
One shoot. Two films. Zero compromise on craft.
To meet the challenges head-on, Ampersand Studios built a lean, highly specialized crew designed for both documentary rigor and branded content execution—with Tyler Brower functioning simultaneously as director, DP, and photographer to maintain creative consistency across all visual output.
Underwater cinematographer Inge Wegge was brought on locally to capture the subaquatic world of Lofoten’s tidal kelp beds—imagery that became central to both the brand film and the documentary, offering audiences a perspective on seaweed harvesting rarely seen in commercial media. The team structured the production schedule around tidal calendars and harvest cycles rather than traditional shoot-day logic, ensuring the most visually and narratively powerful moments were never missed.
On the brand partnership side, XTRATUF’s integration was handled through authentic context—product worn by real harvesters doing real work in genuinely brutal conditions—aligning product credibility with environmental narrative in a way no studio shoot could replicate. The result was a cohesive suite of deliverables: a branded short film, still photography, and co-production credit on Intertidal, giving XTRATUF deep and lasting content equity from a single production investment.
